I had the unfortunate experience of staying at the aanuka Beach Resort in Coffs Harbour for my honeymoon in December 2007. The holiday was booked and paid for in advance, via their online system. That was all well set up and easy to use.

However what was “sold” on the website is not what we recieved when we got there, bear in mind this was a specific honeymoon package that I bought.

On the second day we needed some more soap and toilet paper and to my disgust, when I went to reception, I was told that I had to come and ask for more as it wasn’t a serviced room. That meant no fresh towels or sheets or toiletries for the whole time we were their unless we paid extra for them or washed them ourselves in the room. Who sells honeymooners unserviced rooms? That is the last thing we wanted to think about on our honeymoon.

Then came the spa bath.

First night of the honeymoon and we fill up the spa, put in the “bath salts” and its all smelling lovely. As we lower ourselves into the spa for a romantic soak in the tub, I press the button for the bubbles and all this filth spits out of the pipes.

the filthy spa

My wife jumps out of the bath, this incident has greatly spoiled “the moment” and our first night gets off to a very disappointing beginning. [the rest of the night was great].

Next morning when we complained, eventually house keeping came around to clean the spa, TWICE! We thought it was all fixed, so on the following night we thought we try the spa again. After our disappoininting first attempt were incresingly angry when “going for the bubbles” again and MORE junk came out of the spa.

The spa had not been cleaned properly to say the least. After a third attempt by housecleaning to clean it we weren’t going to try again. We were offered no compensation from the staff, management seemed to operate “off-site” so we asked if we could get a refund on the last 2 nights. NO was the answer unless you pay 1 nights fee as a “booking fee”. What a croc!

Its in a lovely location, it looks nice in the pictures, BUT the service, cleanliness, general state of repair AND the food is all very substandard for the amount of money they charge. I have stayed in country pubs for $15/night that gave better service and rooms  than AANUKA beach resort. DON’T STAY THERE.

you have been warned.
